Mark W. Schwiebert is a native of the Illinois Quad Cities. Born in Moline, he graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island with a B.A. in history in 1972. He then attended Drake University where he received his law degree (J.D.) in 1975; and his Masters in History in 1976. While a student at Drake, he received the American Jurisprudence Award for excellence in Business Associations and was a Supreme Court Day Moot Court Finalist
After law school, he joined his father, Lloyd Schwiebert in the firm of Schwiebert and Schwiebert. He has been engaged in the general practice of law for over 37 years. His primary areas of practice cover estate planning, real estate, personal injury, commercial litigation, and family law. He has presented numerous workshops on estate planning to community groups, as well as being a lecturer in Probate Law at the former Marycrest College and a presenter at Continuing Legal Education seminars sponsored by the Rock Island County Bar Association.
Mark has been heavily involved in civic and community affairs. He served on the Rock Island City Council from 1981 to 1989 and was Mayor of Rock Island for 20 years from 1989 to 2009. Before stepping down as Mayor, he chaired the Bi-State Regional Commission, the Rock Island Arsenal Task Force, and was a Vice President of the Illinois Municipal League. He also helped establish the Rock Island Economic Growth Corporation and Rock Island’s Advanced Technology and Sustainability Consortium, and was principal sponsor of the City’s historic preservation ordinance. Schwiebert Riverfront Park in the downtown was named in his honor in 2010.
Mark serves on numerous boards including Augustana College, the Figge Art Museum, Rock Island Library Foundation, and Trinity Regional Health Systems.
Mark is married to Deborah and they reside in Rock Island. In his free time, Mark enjoys travel with Debbie, watercolor and oil painting, writing, reading, as well as hiking and weight lifting.
